Mixing traditional Indian craftsmanship with modern elegance

Karin Gardiner, Ruby Star Traders' owner and founder, has a long history with India having travelled to the region every year since 1995 when she first visited a friend.

All Ruby Star Traders' products are made in India and according to giftguideonline.com the brand collaborates with its suppliers to modify shapes, colours and prints that Indian artisans have come up with to create unique products.

One such example of this is the beautifully designed Helsinki Chair (pictured) which, as described to us by Anna Dupree from Ruby Star Traders, was completely hand crafted in Rajasthan, Jaipur, by artisans highly skilled in the traditional Indian caning technique.

"The fabric was chosen by Karin, an Aztec print that she felt was still quite modern yet classic." Anna told us, "This follows Ruby Star Traders' ethos of 'Bohemian Chic design'. We can assume this was the Artisan's interpretation of mid-century furniture - very Scandinavian."

Where possible, Ruby Star Traders purchases from the traditional craft regions in India, where their products are produced by craftsmen working in traditional workshops. Purchasing in this way not only helps local craftsmen keep their skills alive, but it also helps create a steady source of income for families in these regions.
